We went there a few times. Still blows my mind.
Have some of my favorite moon shots that I managed to get.

I was looking at the full Moon tonight after immersing myself in Apollo 11 today. “Damn,” I thought , “we went there.” Such an extraordinary feat of engineering, teamwork, and resolve.
Great shots.

These are wonderful. I love all of the details you were able to get. I'm guessing you used the 300mm zoom?

Right? I was telling anybody who would listen today to take a minute tonight and look at the moon, and remember just exactly what you said.
And thanks.

Thanks!
I’m guessing you used the 300mm zoom?
For all but the first one. That one I used my giant old and heavy 70-300 manual focus with a 2x teleconverter. Something I won’t try again on my D3300 because the weight can actually bend or warp the mount on my lil camera.

I have been pondering combining a teleconverter with a 300mm zoom lens (one day, a day a long time from now) for action birb photography and such. How does that work?

I used to be amazed that we went to the moon. Now I’m more sad that we haven’t left LEO in forty years (longer than I’ve been alive). I’m too jaded and cynical.

The one you want would be this one from Nikon . Your AF and metering info will still work but it i s of course expensive.
I have this one from Tokina (which I can’t seem to find anywhere else(or an equivalent)). Downside of this one is everything is manual. But it cheap.
Important bit to keep in mind when using one is that your f-stop is affected along with focal length.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
When using a 1.4x teleconverter, you lose 1 stop of light, so for example, when using an f/2.8 lens, the widest aperture you can use the lens at is f/4
A 1.7x teleconverter will lose 1½ stops of light, so with an f/2.8 NIKKOR lens, you will end up with an effective wide aperture of f/4.5
A 2x teleconverter loses 2 stops of light, so an f/2.8 lens drops down to a wide aperture of f/5.6.

I was in first grade(1990ish) when I found out we hadn’t been back in however many years. I still remember that anger and confusion .
young me annoying my teacher: Why would we stop going? Why is there no moon base? The hell is the shuttle doing? It can’t even make it to the moon?

My daughter (6) and I were on a bike/run last evening, and I had her stop and look at the moon as it was rising. She’s always been in love with it, and I’ve always done everything I can to encourage that love. Got her a 3D-printed moon nightlight. We read books about it all the time. She’s still sure that she’s gonna go there.
I hope she’s right.

Once you accept nuclear power into your life, all things are possible with the power of the atom.
Nuclear thermal rockets for ultra heavy lift rockets, fission fragment rockets for interstellar exploration probes, and of course external pulsed nuclear drives for warships to crush any xeno scum that might dare oppose humanity’s manifest destiny.
But seriously, nuclear power (fission and hopefully fusion soon) is the only way forward to creating interplanetary spaceships and colonies . Anything else just doesn’t have the power.

Humans haven’t left LEO, but plenty of our stuff has. It’s a matter of time. My roommate is a trained commercial astronaut. That basically means she tests spacesuits & things on short one-off contracts every once in a while . Her sole life goal since about her mid-teens has been to step foot on Mars. She’s even content with dyi ng there if means a few minutes of living. She was a final 100 candidate for the somewhat canned and ill conceived Mars One mission and took part in a simulated asteroid mission spending 2 months in a tiny room with 3 other people while being subjected to sleep deprivation and the every whim of a huge research team. That of course was after she volunteered to be a test subject in a NASA centrifuge. Sigh. Never dull.
Elon Musk will probably beat everyone else in the West but my bet is on the Chinese doing it first but not before losing some people trying. We’re kind of our own worst enemy on this stuff because we’re not willing to risk lives on these missions despite having lines of people who are fully willing.

Noted. Thanks. Did you know that they make dedicated astrophotography cameras? Apparently, the primary limitation of using a DSLR to shoot the sky, the moon, the planets, and astronomical objects is that DSLR sensors have a protective coating that blocks light from the UV and infrared spectrum. While there are companies that can modify the sensor by placing a clear protective layer over the sensor, it voids the camera’s warranty and can cause other issues that a dedicated camera doesn’t have. They also have built-in coolimg sysyems to eliminate noise from long exposures. CCD astro cameras have to be used with a telescope. CMOS cameras don’t, but they have monochrome sensors and need three color filters to shoot in color. But the images you get with a dedicated camera are much more richly colored and detailed because of the extra spectrums.
They look weird and boxy, but you’re shooting at night, so no one will know that but you.

I knew about modifying dslrs to shoot in infrared but was unaware of the other type of camera.
That actually seems pretty reasonably priced....

It looks that way to me, too, but you have to factor in the cost of the telescope, too. That one can't be used without one.

Yeah, I don’t have a problem with that. One day, when I live in an area more astrophotography-friendly.
Ooh, looky! Solar filters are not expensive and allow you to safely shoot solar eclipses and flares and stuff.

I should get some of those for the next eclipse. Those things sold out fast during the last one, lol.

Yeah, I understood that he was a pro. Maybe not career-wise, but that his photos were available for purchase.
I just spent ninety minutes cleaning the bathroom (two of my brothers and my nephew will be staying in the basement with me this weekend. I’ve spent several hours over the last three days cleaning for their arrival ). If I say anything weirder than usual, blame it on the fumes. I don't have exhaust down here, so I'm running the fan full blast, but whoo, it's still a lot.

Argh. I'm trying to track down an 18-300mm FX lens to bookmark for future purpose, and my results are awash with DX lenses. You DX users are spoiled for choice. The closest I can find is a 28-300mm FX that Amazon has in very good used condition for $650ish. Am I missing something, or is that size of FX lens just not made with a CPU?

The 28-300 is the one you want. Remember us DXers got to deal with that crop factor so our 18mm becomes 28mm.
